Review by irfandra fitra

The album Day of Reckoning by Pentagram is a masterpiece of doom metal. The band's signature sound is in full force, with Bobby Liebling's haunting vocals, Victor Griffin's crushing guitar riffs, and Greg Turley's thunderous bass lines. The album opens with the title track, which sets the tone for the rest of the album with its dark, foreboding lyrics and heavy instrumentation. Other standout tracks include "Forever My Queen," "Relentless," and "All Your Sins." The production quality is top-notch, allowing each instrument to shine through and creating a powerful, cohesive sound. Day of Reckoning is a must-have for any fan of doom metal or heavy music in general.

Born in Arlington, Virginia, Pentagram dates all the way back to 1971 and is considered one of the first doom metal acts. Over the course of the years, frontman has presided over approximately 2 dozen line ups. The "classic" '70s line up consisted of Liebling, (guitar), (bass) and (drums) (with occasional appearances by 2nd guitarists and ), with Liebling and O'Keefe handling the songwriting. The band's '70s output was sparse (only a few 7" EPs) but now considered by many fans to be legendary and Liebling, who at the time handled the bulk of the songwriting, had a large number of songs that went unrecorded or released at the time. This line up lasted until 1976, when tensions between Liebling and the rest of the band over Bobby's drug use and the band's inablility to secure a record deal escalated to the point that Bobby was ousted. Bobby owned the name, though, and resurrected it in 1978 with new members for what is now called "The High Voltage-era" due to the name of the record label who put out an EP by this particular line up. In the early '80s, Liebling and "High Voltage-era" drummer joined the band , who would soon assume the Pentagram name. It was the Death Row line up (Liebling, Hasselvander, and guitarist , with "High Voltage-era" bassist replacing Death Row bassist ) that would record and release the band's first LP, a self-titled affair (later re-issued under the name "Relentless"), in 1985. The group recorded another LP in 1987 (with drummer , replacing Joe Hasselvander, who would later re-record Stuart's parts upon the album's reissue in the 1990s), only to break up afterward. The Death Row line up (with Martin Swaney and Joe Hasselvander) would reunite again in the 1990s to record a third LP before disbanding for good. In 1999, with the legend of Pentagram growing, Liebling resurrected the name again, eventually recording two LPs with on-again/off-again drummer supplying the instrumental backing and another album in 2004 which saw Bobby backed by members of . The majority of the songs on these albums were written by Bobby in the 1970s. In 2008, a now sober Bobby returned with a new Pentagram line-up, this one consisting of Gary Isom (drums), Russ Strahan (guitar), and Mark Ammen (bass) and, for the first time in years, the band began performing live and touring. Eventually, Strahan, Ammen, and Isom would drop out of the band, but Pentagram continued on and began preparing to work on a new album, called "Last Rites" with former Pentagram guitarist Victor Griffin, bassist Greg Turley, and Tim Tomaselli lending assistance.

Now let's take a break from this review-writing process and let's talk a bit about guitar tone. Apparently, the majority of people think that the only thing on which a kind of music can verge is the quantity of distortion it has. Some more intelligent musicians know that one has to decide what kind of distortion he wants to achieve a special sound. The majority of people like this think that this is sufficient to make the difference between a Black from a Doom Metal album, or a Shoegaze one from a Grindcore one.Want to know a thing? What's been written before it's only partially true. Some guitarists, in an attempt to create an empty guitar sound use a secret: they simply play without a plectrum. The riffs played in such a manner are quieter, less sharp, but fortunately they don't detract the atmosphere they bring to the music. This fingerpicking technique was present long before Saint Vitus and Pentagram made their coming, and both their legacy is due to this secret trick.Considering this, there's little wonder why Day of Reckoning, Pentagram's second album, seems so smooth and (eh) accessible. Considering songs like "Madman", "Day of Reckoning" and the album's pop masterpiece, "Broken Wows", Pentagram are a sort of link between Blue Cheer and Cheap Trick. Bobby Liebling and Victor Griffin's songwriting can function both as a gift for melodies or even a sort of Post-Jazz atmosphere ("When the Screams Come"). And while Bobby isn't a particularly great singer, his twisted sense of humor encompasses on a mysterious homicide case ("Madman") and of the many ways his characters get constantly tortured. He puts them in trial ("How long can you keep pretending / You can't live by the rules you're bending / All your prayers do no good / When you don't do what you should / Lucifer lives, it's no illusion / Your mind is in confusion / Thoughts denied all come true / When he takes your soul from you"), then he puts them into the fire under epileptic breaks ("I laugh hearing you cry / Fire bath you want to die"). Other times, he offers childish views about war ("Wartime") or denies the others' pleasures ("The time that you take to find out life / Is not usually worth itself / Developin' a real "How to get by" / And polishing all it's wealths / Have you ever felt pain / When the screams come you know / that you're dying in vain?"). Day of Reckoning may be a bit inconsistent, but fortunately, its high points soar.Highlights:"Broken Wows", "When the Screams Come", "Burning Savior", "Madman".

As it stands now as of this writing, yes, this is the original mix recorded at CUE and released on Napalm (Dutch East India Trading). After Bobby signed with Hammy Halmshaw and Peaceville Records, it was agreed that Joe Hasselvander would re-record over the Stuart Rose drum tracks. This effectively and permanently changed the complexion of the Peaceville mix. I know for a fact there is a 1/4 inch reel to reel copy that was dubbed directly from the original multi-track masters at CUE. It's my understanding that tape is in safe custody with a trusted person. Victor Griffin had second thoughts and misgivings about wiping Stuart's contribution. In my conversations with Stu before his untimely death, he never fully grasped the weight of the transgression committed against him. I can tell you he was hurt by the poor hand he was dealt in the underhanded affair. It did drive a bit of a wedge and distance between him and PENTAGRAM for some time. After Joe Hasselvander vacated his lofty position to seek greener pastures auditioning for White Lion, you can imagine Stu shitting the bed when offered the opportunity to replace Joe. Stu was no Joe Hasselvander. At that time and place, he was the textbook definition of a nice guy, no sex god and self conscious about his appearance - but oh man he was young, worked his ass off, played hard, did his absolute best and was everyones friend. He did get the 'short end' and that was sad. Joe's reputation does cast a long shadow. The rehearsal tape recorded at Stu's house in Dale City from April 20, 1986, just before PENTAGRAM began formal recording of "Day of Reckoning" reveals songs "Hot Blood" and "Blood Lust" were fully developed and slated for inclusion - but their recording budget evaporated and were set aside. I miss Stu and he will be missed.

Wow! I love this I have heard the other mix but I like this better. Sounds like vol 4 or sabotage era sabbath. Ohh so good ?

I don't know. I think the re-recorded version sounds much better. The crisper more prominent drums bring it to life. This version sounds cool though, in an underground tape trader type of way.

The Relentless/Pentagram album was originally recorded as a Death Row demo and all the better for it. As great as this is, the drums do sound a bit fake.
