North, the 2003 album by Elvis Costello, is a departure from his usual sound. This album is a stripped-down, introspective collection of songs that showcase Costello's voice and songwriting skills.

The album opens with "You Left Me in the Dark," a slow, mournful ballad that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Costello's voice is hauntingly beautiful, and the sparse instrumentation allows his vocals to shine.

Throughout the album, Costello explores themes of love, loss, and regret. "Still" is a standout track that features a simple piano melody and Costello's poignant lyrics. "Let Me Tell You About Her" is another standout track that showcases Costello's storytelling abilities.

North is a beautiful and introspective album that showcases Elvis Costello's vocal and songwriting talents. While it may not be his most commercially successful album, it is a must-listen for any fan of his music.

So, Costello collaborates with Bacharach and then tries to use what he's learned to write his own Bacharach album. The result sounds like many other soft, vocal jazz albums of its time - uninspired and unmemorable. I remember hearing Costello interviewed around this time and he spoke a lot about learning to "use his voice as an instrument." And, also, acknowledging the limits to his vocal range. You get the sense, listening to this set, that he longs to be, I don't know, Bing Crosby, or some other similar crooner. But he's not-he's a rock and roller, a folk rocker at best, most believable when he's angry or genuinely introspective. The result is self-conscious nonsense. Worst of all, the tunes lack the hooks and memorable licks of his best material. You won't walk away from listening to this album humming much of anything. There's a maturity to the lyrics here -- he's telling stories and developing characters. But, it all gets lost in mediocre musical composition.
