About Big Flame
Members: Alan Brown (Bass/Vocals), Greg O'Keeffe (Guitar), Dil Green (Drums).
Formed in Hulme, Manchester in December 1982, Big Flame appeared on the NME's "C86" compilation and recorded four sessions for John Peel's Radio 1 show. They played their farewell gig at the Manchester Boardwalk on 11 October 1986, styling themselves as "Manchester's favourite jazz fuck trio explosione!".
After the band split, Brown joined Ron Johnson label-mates A Witness (with whom Big Flame had previously toured) as a drummer before forming The Great Leap Forward and O'Keeffe joined Meatmouth.

O god...Big flame...had forgotten all about them...only heard them because when I lived in Manchester their drummer Dil?? also drummed in my mate's band (Big Ed and His Rockin' Rattlesnakes)...now there was a band...lol...
Why can't people accept, just on a purely aesthetic level, that they sound a LOT like the Minutemen. Listen to the first 3 MM records and try pretending they don't. There's also a large chunk of Fire Engines, Josef K & Contortions in there as well. They weren't original but they screwed that sound down as tightly as they could. Playing with limp C86 bands certainly worked in their favour too, though the Three Johns and the Stretchheads definately gave them a run for their money.
I don't get the Minutemen thing either and this is quite mellow for a Big Flame song
There's some live footage of the same session somewhere on youtube that hasn't been solarised, so you can see whats going on. Great band, but when somebody played me the Minutemen a little part of my youth died.
Either I was into rubbish in my teens or I was simply ahead of the times.. this still sounds brilliant
